We are looking for individuals who are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and currently taking Lithium to participate in a PET scan study, which investigates the impact of Lithium on astrocytes (a type of brain cells) in the brain and blood. This is important because it could ultimately lead to the development of new treatments for bipolar disorder.
You will be invited to participate in an in-person screening visit, where we will complete an interview and a blood work to determine eligibility.
After confirming eligibility, we will complete two brain scan visits, PET (which involves a small amount of radiation) and MRI (which involves no radiation).
On the PET scanning day, blood samples will be taken to measure markers of inflammation in the blood and brain. The amount of blood taken is about 40% of a blood donation.
The study will be a total of up to 8 hours and the three visits (screening, PET scan and MRI scan) will be completed within 2 to 3 weeks’ time.
Compensation will be provided.
