Respectful Learning Environment and Learner Mistreatment
At CAMH, we are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment for all students. Learner mistreatment—whether intentional or unintentional—can negatively affect individual experiences and the overall learning culture.
What is Learner Mistreatment?
Learner mistreatment refers to disrespectful or unprofessional behaviors directed toward a learner or group of learners. These behaviors may include actions that undermine confidence, create discomfort, or contribute to a hostile learning environment.
Mistreatment may also include microaggressions, which can manifest as recurring snubs, slights, put-downs, or gestures that demean individuals based on gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, immigration status, socioeconomic background, or other aspects of identity.
Commitment to a Safe Learning Space
CAMH has a zero-tolerance policy for learner mistreatment and is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, professional, and psychologically safe environment. If students experience or witness mistreatment, support and reporting mechanisms are available through the Student Centre and CAMH leadership.
For more information, students can access resources during onboarding or reach out to the CAMH Student Centre at student.centre@camh.ca.

What Our Learners Say
Here is what students have shared about their experience at CAMH:
Child and Youth Work
“The astronomical number of positive experiences I have had while completing placement in the Youth Day Hospital has been inspirational. I got to witness how the interdisciplinary team worked together in the best interest of the youth, providing opportunities for growth while maintaining classroom expectations.”
Food and Nutrition Management
“Being part of a team that prioritized patient well-being gave me real-world insight into how nutrition management plays a critical role in recovery and quality of life. I also gained valuable experience using food production systems and saw firsthand how efficiency and empathy can go hand-in-hand in healthcare food services.”
Registered Nurse (RN)
“I liked how welcoming the team was and how willing the nurses were to help educate me with no judgement.”
Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
“In my consolidation placement, I was assigned to a unit where the inter-professional team worked extremely well together. As a student who has worked in five different units, including a mental health unit at a different hospital, I have never seen a team with this much passion for what they do and as helpful as my current unit.”
Pharmacist
“Throughout the rotation, I felt that I learned a great deal about applying the knowledge gained in school, but also new knowledge about topics that were not explored in school. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating, and I had a dedicated working space and laptop to complete my work.”
Psychology
“Interdisciplinary team that worked closely together. Frequent touch points with supervisor and team. Always felt supported.”
Psychotherapy / Spiritual Care
“My placement provided a deeper dive into skills through practice with clients with significant mental health impairment. Additionally, there was excellent supervision and opportunity to share challenges and get feedback. This experience far exceeded my expectations, which were high going in.”
