Depression is a mental illness that often begins in youth. Identifying depression early and providing evidence-based treatment tailored to the needs of young people provides the best chances of quicker and sustained recovery. This self-directed online simulation helps primary care providers to identify and assess depression in youth and develop a treatment plan that supports recovery.
Learning Objectives
After this simulation, you will be able to do the following:
- Explain confidentiality and its limits to youth before beginning a mental health assessment.
- Determine the severity of mental health symptoms using appropriate assessment tools.
- Identify immediate and future safety risks that may lead to youth harming themselves and/or others.
- Develop a treatment plan in collaboration with youth experiencing depression.
- Review two potential adverse effects of antidepressant medication that may be particularly concerning (suicidal thinking and manic symptoms).
