Course Overview
This course is a part of the Opioid Dependence Treatment Certificate Program. This online course introduces the fundamental concepts of concurrent disorders, with a focus on best practices and research in the field. It is designed to provide physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors/case managers with the necessary information, skills and tools required to identify, screen and support clients with co-occurring substance use and mental illness.
Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Define what is concurrent disorders
- Discuss the prevalence of concurrent disorders, highlighting populations with higher prevalence
- Reflect how values, beliefs and stigma affect delivery of care
- Explain how psychoactive drugs and prescribed medications interact with mental health disorders
- Implement screening and assessment for both substance use and mental health disorders
- Describe the challenges and benefits of integrating care for mental health and substance use
- Incorporate best practices, including a trauma-informed approach, to support and treat patients with concurrent disorders.
Certification and Accreditation
Participants interested in obtaining a Certificate in Opioid Dependence Treatment must complete the Opioid use disorder treatment (OUDT) course plus three elective courses to meet the certificate requirements.

- The College of Family Physicians of Canada Mainpro+ credits (1 credit/hour)
