The Early Psychosis Unit (EPU) is a specialist inpatient unit dedicated to developmentally appropriate care, early intervention, support, and treatment of young people (ages 16-29 years) who are experiencing significant mental health issues with psychosis. The EPU includes general psychiatric ward beds and Psychiatric Intensive Care Beds (PICU). PICU beds allow for more intensive support and observation for individuals who are experiencing severe illness.
An interprofessional team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, pharmacists, recreation therapists and program assistants provide individuals and their families with the initial period of care and recovery. The EPU offers youth-oriented group psychotherapy programming that focuses on psychosis education, CBT skills, self-management, skill building and recreation. Discharge planning begins at the time of admission and patients are referred to their local community mental health services for further support as required.
