Dr. Paul Shuper is a Senior Scientist and Head of Community, Addiction and Mental Health Research & Evaluation in the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, and a Research Affiliate at the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy at the University of Connecticut.
Areas of Research
Dr. Shuper’s research primarily focuses on addressing the impact of alcohol, substance use, and mental health on the prevention and treatment of HIV. His work in this area includes randomized controlled trials assessing harm-reduction interventions among people living with/at risk for HIV; prevention-related research focused on the initiation of crystal methamphetamine use among sexual minority men; and initiatives involving key populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Based on his program of research, Dr. Shuper has served a scientific expert in the area of alcohol and HIV for the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2020, he received an Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN) “Innovator” Award for his work in the field of HIV.
