Course Overview
This course is part of the Understanding Mental Health in Later Life project. The goal of the project is to raise awareness of mental health and substance use issues among older adults in the community and promote help-seeking behaviours. This course is designed for support and health care workers within long-term care and retirement homes. It is intended to help increase their knowledge and awareness of the mental health problems and needs of their older adult clients.

- Overview of mental health and mental illness
- A snapshot of demographics of older adults in long-term care homes
- The prevalence of mental health issues in older adults
- Common mental health challenges in older adults, including depression, anxiety disorders, dementia and substance use problems
- Factors influencing the mental health of older adults
- Ways to support positive mental health in older adults in care
