Event Overview
Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions in the world; yet it remains widely misunderstood.
Far more than ordinary sadness or "feeling down," clinical depression (also called major depression) is a complex mood disorder shaped by a combination of factors, including genetic predisposition, changes in brain chemistry, life stress, and personal history. For many people, it can be debilitating, persistent, and difficult to recognize — both in ourselves and in those we care about.
Psychiatrist and researcher Dr. Gerasimos Konstantinou will focus on demystifying depression and offer practical, evidence-informed insights into understanding and addressing it.
What to Expect
Understanding Depression: This talk will explore what depression actually is (and what it is not), and how to recognize when low mood may be something more serious.
Dispelling Misinformation: Addressing common myths and misconceptions that can prevent or delay people from seeking help.
Getting Help: A discussion of practical ways to support ourselves and others, what to do when someone close to us is struggling, and when it may be time to seek professional care.
