Remembering Cree cellist and composer Cris Derksen, an extraordinary collaborator whose presence, generosity, and kindness touched our CAMH community.
Cris worked closely with participants of the Art of Healing patient program, a vibrant collaboration with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) that is deeply rooted in creativity, healing, and community.
On April 30, 2026, at a packed Roy Thomson Hall, we came together to experience Cris’ new work, Still Here, and celebrate the culmination of the third year of the program co-led by Shkaabe Makwa, the Centre for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis wellness, and Community Engagement at CAMH.
During weekly sessions with Cris, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis patients at CAMH, musicians of the TSO, and Shkaabe Makwa staff connected through storytelling and music. Cris’ commitment to honouring people’s voices shaped every part of the creative process.
Cris’ new work is a creation of this powerful collaboration that leads with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis voices. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to co-create music with Cris that will continue to carry her spirit forward.
