This fall, CAMH will work with general contractor Roof Tile Management and Boldera Architects to continue restoring the historic wall that surrounds much of our Queen Street campus. Built by patients of the original Provincial Lunatic Asylum during the 19th and 20th centuries, the wall borders both the hospital and the surrounding community.
Preserving the heritage wall is an important part of CAMH’s redevelopment and our commitment to honoring the past. The wall stands as a tribute to the patients who built it and reminds us of the importance of treating people experiencing mental illness and addiction with respect, dignity and compassion.
Heritage wall restoration
We’re focusing on the most critical section of the heritage wall, on the south side of CAMH’s property, where the wall has sustained noticeable damage and structural issues.
To prepare for the restoration, the contractor will install protective fencing and hoarding on both sides of the wall starting on Monday, October 5th, 2026.
Impacts for Sudbury Town Home Residents: The hoarding will extend approximately four feet south of the heritage wall onto the back driveway. Please use extra caution when driving through the area.
Tree removal and replanting
Three trees have grown into this section of the heritage wall. We have worked closely with an arborist to assess the trees and their growth. To safely repair the damaged and structurally unsound section of the wall, the arborist must remove these three trees. The date for tree removal has not been scheduled yet, and we will provide updates on our website.
We understand that removing trees can be upsetting and concerning. We’re grateful to the arborist for their knowledge and expertise, and we’re committed to replanting three new trees on the Sudbury Townhomes property in spring 2027. We’ll work with the arborist to identify the best locations for replanting to prioritize the health and longevity of the new trees.
As part of our Redevelopment, we’re creating public community green spaces that everyone can use once construction is complete. Our vision for CAMH’s transformation combines accessible, welcoming green spaces with preserving our history and the heritage wall.
We will continue to provide regular updates at www.camh.ca/neighbours and through our community mailing list.
