Tell us a bit about yourself, and your role here at CAMH.
I am Apeksha Barot and I have been with CAMH for 10 years, working as a dietary attendant. I prepare and serve meals which aligns with doctor’s recommendations, specific dietary requirements and nutritional guidelines. I maintain proper hygiene, record food temperatures to ensure safety and clean equipment after being used.
Can you talk a bit about what prompted you to work in healthcare, specifically mental health? How did you wind up working at CAMH?
I like to help others make a positive impact in people’s lives. Working in healthcare, especially mental health, is very challenging. Mental health is important to me because I think everyone deserves care, understanding and respect. CAMH focuses on supporting people and improving their well-being. I am grateful to be a part of this team.
Can you share a moment or an experience where you felt fulfilled about the work you do at CAMH?
I feel fulfilled when patients express appreciation for the meals. I also feel so happy when patients get discharged and transferred back into the community as that indicates their health has improved. I feel like we are playing a considerable role in the recovery and overall health of patients and that leave me fulfilled.
What keeps you motivated or what drives you to continue to do your best in the work that you do?
There are a lot of things that motivate and keep me doing my best such as when my supervisors, manager and coworkers recognize and appreciate my work. When we work together as a team and we create a positive work environment. When we get positive comments for the food service we provide.
