CAMH’s Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) initiative was formally launched in September 2022 as a three-year partnership with the Registered Nurses Association (RNAO). By joining the BPSO initiative, CAMH is optimizing health outcomes through the systematic implementation and evaluation of RNAO's clinical Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs). As we are less than a year from graduating from this program, we are highlighting some of the incredible work being completed at CAMH to support evidence-based practice cultures.
This feature highlights Amirah Hassen, an Advance Practice Clinical Leader (APCL) and registered nurse supporting the Crisis and Critical Care Unit 5. Amirah started at CAMH as an Emergency Department nurse in December 2018. Learn more about Amirah and her contributions to CAMH’s BPSO journey below!
“After completing my final consolidation placement here as a student in 2018, I felt like the exposure to mental health care helped me find my niche in nursing. I was drawn to becoming a BPSO lead for the Promoting Safety: Alternative Approaches to the Use of Restraints guideline as safety and risk mitigation have always been at the forefront of my priorities as a nursing leader.
Working in CAMH's Emergency Department exposed me to a higher rate of restraint use as incoming patients are potentially experiencing some of their most mentally and/or physically unwell moments. Transitioning into an inpatient leadership role allowed me to approach this issue from a different perspective. It was very rewarding to witness clients' recovery journeys and observe the diverse strategies that teams used to de-escalate situations.
To me, evidence-based practice is essential because it allows us to provide the best possible care based on what’s been shown to work in real settings. With alternative approaches to restraints, it’s about more than just following guidelines, it’s choosing the right approaches that research has proven to improve outcomes and support clients’ dignity during a crisis. By relying on evidence-based practices, we ensure that compassion guides our actions and that the best available research supports our decisions, leading to a better experience for those we care for.
Outside of work, I love staying active! Whether it's going for long walks with my dog or strength training at the gym, it's a great way to blow off some steam and boost my mood. It helps me feel grounded, which definitely makes a difference when it comes to staying focused and positive both at work and in life!”
