Dr. Alan Wilson is Chief Radiochemist with the Research Imaging Centre at CAMH. He is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
Areas of Research
Dr. Wilson’s research is focused on developing new radiopharmaceuticals for imaging the human brain with positron emission tomography (PET). This work is aimed particularly at studying the etiology and treatment of diseases such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and major depressive disorder. The majority of Dr. Wilson’s work along with his radiochemistry team is devoted to the application of synthetic/physical organic chemistry to applied radiochemistry using short-lived isotopes such as carbon-11 (half-life = 20 minutes) and fluorine-18 (half-life = 2 hours). This chemistry and radiochemistry research involves developing new techniques of radiolabellling organic molecules using automated and remote methods. Novel techniques employed include radio-HPLC, radio-TLC, autoradiography, LC-MS, and robotics.
