The CAMH Centre for Prevention Science (CPS) in London, Ontario is part of the Social and Epidemiological Research (SER) Department and the University of Toronto.
CPS houses the "Fourth R" project for schools, a comprehensive violence prevention and healthy relationship program which is currently being used in a number of high schools.
Strategies for Healthy Youth Relationships, featuring the "Fourth R" is a school-based program developed to help adolescents form healthy relationships and make better choices while they navigate critical developmental minefields such as substance use, sexual relationships, bullying and violence. Through open dialogue and role-playing, the curriculum engages teachers and students in enthusiastic discussion about peer pressure, media literacy, emotional and psychological abuse and healthy communication. The core program is offered in Grade 9 Health and Physical Education classes. There are also curricula on healthy relationships developed for English classes in Grades 9-12.
The CAMH Centre for Prevention Science works closely with academic researchers and community partners, collaborating closely with the University of Western Ontario's Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children to implement effective, long-lasting prevention initiatives for children and youth. CAMH is committed to transforming new knowledge into practical resources, and through careful evaluation and dissemination CPS aims to elevate the study of prevention to that of a science, making it a fundamental part of our services to children, youth, and families.
