He is also an Associate Professor in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry and Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto.
Areas of Research
Dr. Selby focuses on addiction research in special populations and knowledge translation using different methods and models. Combining clinical and population-based approaches, he is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) Study. Introduced in January 2006, this study is the first of its kind in Canada evaluating the methods and effectiveness of providing Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to Ontario smokers.
Dr. Selby is also a PI with the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU). His interests in transdisciplinary research in tobacco control include preclinical studies, understanding the mediating mechanisms of pharmacotherapy, and clinical trials to public health interventions.
Based on his commitment to knowledge translation, Dr. Selby created the Training Enhancement in Applied Cessation Counselling and Health (TEACH) Learning Centre, a certificate program in Intensive Smoking Cessation Counselling; the Network for the Prevention of Gestational and Neonatal Exposure to Tobacco Smoke (PREGNETS), and is directing a graduate degree course in Health Behaviour change at the University of Toronto. Dr. Selby also co-founded Web-Assisted Tobacco Interventions (WATI), an international community of practice to explore the rise of technology for smoking cessation.
