Student Training Program
Addiction Therapy has a very active student training program. Each year we provide clinical placements to students from enrolled in an undergraduate social work program (Bachelor of Social Work). Some of the affiliation agreements include: York University, School of Social Work, Ryerson University School of Social Work, McMaster University School of Social Work. Students can expect to learn a variety of skills including: psychosocial assessment of substance use, individual and group counselling, case management, discharge planning, psycho-education, motivational interviewing, structured relapse prevention, harm reduction strategies, as well as being a member of an interprofessional team.
We now require all of our addiction therapy students to meet the following criteria before they can be interviewed for placement opportunities.
1. Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in social work and in their final year.
2. Taken an introductory course about substance use and/or substance use interventions/modalities.
3. Previous experience/knowledge of working with a person living with a concurrent disorder would be considered an asset
4. Students that are members of diverse communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Student placements are organized through school field instructors who can forward student's resume and cover letter that should indicate the student's top three areas of interest. Two references should also be included in the package sent to the Educational Coordinator.
