H. David Archibald
H. David Archibald, founding Director of the Addiction Research Foundation (now a part of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health), died in Toronto on July 12, 2009. He played an outstanding role in the addictions field, not only in Canada but internationally, as an advisor to the World Health Organization, the North American Association of Alcoholism Programs, the United Nations and the international Council on Alcoholism and Addictions. He conducted inquiries into addictions problems for the governments of Canada, Bermuda and Thailand that had major influence on drug policies, and his advice was sought by addiction treatment groups in many parts of the world. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health held a commemorative event on October 28, 2009, to honour his monumental contribution to the field of addictions, and reprinted this book as part of the tribute.
