TEACH Core Course: A Comprehensive Course on Smoking Cessation - Essential Skills and Strategies

This course is held under the auspices of the Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Ontario.

Description/Learning objectives

This introductory session will help practitioners to screen, assess and treat people with tobacco dependence. Tools and techniques for enhancing motivation and running cessation groups are also covered.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify the major clinical implications of smoking prevalence and provide clear and accurate information surrounding tobacco use and dependence.
Adapt and apply evidence-based screening and assessment tools and psycho-social interventions for tobacco dependence.
Identify and describe evidence-based use of pharmacotherapies in tobacco cessation and their therapeutic use.
Integrate motivational interviewing strategies into clinical practice with clients who are ambivalent towards behaviour change.
Adapt treatment plans for specific populations with high tobacco use prevalence and/or risk
Contextualize tobacco use within a broader tobacco control policy framework
Apply harm reduction strategies with clients who are not ready to quit smoking.
Access additional clinical tools and resources to use in clinical practice and continuing professional development.

Target audience

TEACH courses are interdisciplinary and are targeted towards practitioners who have the ability to deliver intensive cessation counselling. Applicants must be employed and receive manager approval prior to applying to TEACH courses. We do not currently accept students into classroom-based courses. There is no minimum educational or professional requirement to attend TEACH courses.

Cost

The Core Course costs $150 for new applicants to TEACH who live within Ontario. The Ministry of Health and Long - Term Care covers the actual cost of this workshop for new applicants. Course registration and materials are covered, with travel and accommodation costs also covered based on organizational resources and need. If participants cancel their space after the cancellation deadline or fail to show up for the course, the $150 will not be refunded. If the new applicant to TEACH lives OUTSIDE of Ontario, the core course costs $900 plus any travel and accommodation costs.

Participants will be provided with a course manual and variety of resources at the training.

Applications for the TEACH Certificate Program are submitted online via the TEACH website and are subject to review. Each time you apply for a course you must complete the full online application. Applications open approximately eight weeks prior to each Certificate Program offering. Application does not ensure registration.
