The Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program at CAMH (NPOP-C)’s primary mandate and major activity is to provide patients and families direct psychiatric consultation and care, from approximately 40 psychiatric consultants who travel on a regular basis to rural and remote communities in Northeastern and Northwestern Ontario. These consultants also provide extensive indirect and informal consultation, support and education to community agencies, mental health professionals, and members of the public in the communities they visit.
Secondly, through an affiliation with the University of Toronto, Department of Psychiatry, NPOP-C promotes northern outreach opportunities to psychiatry residents. Through a program of short electives and longer core and selective rotations, NPOP-C provides a wide range of placements for psychiatric residents, to experience supervised training in remote and rural areas. NPOP-C works closely with CAMH’s Telepsychiatry Service to provide telepsychiatry to complement in-person visits and ensure continuity of care for clients.
Complementary to the MOHLTC funded activities, NPOP-C also provides clinical consultation, education and support to Nunavut, through a separate contract directly funded by the Government of Nunavut.
