Exciting Announcement: New CAMH.CA website is launching late April 2018

For our Neighbours Centre for Addiction
and Mental Health

News about CAMH site at 175 Brentcliffe Road

On October 5, 2015, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and Bellwood Health Services shared a new plan for CAMH’s 175 Brentcliffe Road facility, which has been sitting idle. Bellwood Health Services is a nationally recognized and accredited addiction treatment centre, and a member of the Edgewood Health Network (EHN).

The Leaside Residents have expressed their interest in the 175 Brentcliffe site remaining publicly-owned, and the existing facilities continuing to be used for health care purposes. While looking to lease the site to an appropriate partner, CAMH has taken the neighbours’ concerns into consideration in its planning.

Under the new plan, Edgewood Health Network assumes a long-term lease from CAMH and will renovate the building, which will be repurposed for the use of its member organization, Bellwood Health Services. Bellwood Health Services plans to use the site for the treatment of substance use, problem gambling and other forms of addiction, as well as concurrent PTSD or trauma, providing a variety of inpatient and outpatient treatment programs and counselling services for individuals and families.

Bellwood Health Services is the addiction treatment program founded by the same physician—Dr. Gordon Bell-- who founded the Donwood Institute at 175 Brentcliffe back in 1967. The Donwood was eventually amalgamated with three other addiction and mental health facilities to become the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in 1998.  The late Dr. Bell, Order of Canada recipient, is recognized as an international pioneer in the addiction treatment field.

Locating Bellwood Health Services at 175 Brentcliffe is consistent with the history of the Leaside neighbourhood and with the mandates of CAMH, and Bellwood Health Services, and EHN. This option has approval of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Local Health Integrated Network, and has been subject to a due diligence process.
