Dr. Vivian Morris Rakoff, former CEO and Psychiatrist-in-Chief of the
Clarke Institute of Psychiatry and a recently retired psychiatrist at CAMH, has
been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in the most recent round of
appointments, announced on July 1.
The Order of Canada is the centrepiece of Canada’s honour system and
recognizes singular Canadian individuals for their lifetime of outstanding
achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation. This honour
comes in recognition of Dr. Rakoff’s contributions to psychiatry and his role in
helping found the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
Dr. Rakoff served with distinction as the Chair of the Department of
Psychiatry at the University of Toronto from 1980-1990. Continuing today as a
Professor Emeritus, he was honoured as the namesake of CAMH’s Rakoff Centre for
Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Establishing this innovative research centre
is one of many examples of Dr. Rakoff’s vision and leadership that has shaped
