Diversity and Equity

CAMH has been a leader in diversity and equity. We have been working to eliminate disparities in health status to enable each and every individual to lead a healthy life. Health equity means that we all have equal access to opportunities to attain a higher level of health through timely, appropriate and high-quality care independent of social, economic and demographic status.

CAMH makes a continuous effort to reduce disparities in mental illness and treatment through advocacy, data collection, policy-related activities, research and training programs. These programs aim to consider the causes of health inequities and disparities, and specifically the social determinants of health. These programs pay particular attention to obstacles associated with socio-economic, race, immigration, education and gender status—with the goal of promoting equal opportunities for all and distributing resources to reduce disparities and avoidable inequities.

The Health Equity Office

The Health Equity Office was established in March 2011, though CAMH has been championing diversity for much longer. Diversity as an organizational commitment was approved as a priority in 2000. Since then, CAMH has worked on different initiatives, both in collaboration with others and internally, in the pursuit of health equity.

CAMH plans and implements equity-based initiatives in keeping with the priorities of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) and Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (TC LHIN). These include, but are not limited to:

Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy

The Dismantling Anti-Black Racism strategy includes 22 actions that aim to decrease anti-Black racism at CAMH by the end of fiscal year 2022-23.

The Case for Diversity

The Case for Diversity is a report developed in collaboration with the Wellesley Institute. It builds a case for investing in culturally and linguistically appropriate and diverse mental health services to improve services for immigrant, refugee, ethno-cultural and racialized populations.

The Immigrant and Refugee Mental Health Project

The Immigrant and Refugee Mental Health Project is a capacity-building initiative designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of settlement, social or health service providers. The project, funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), offers accredited online courses, monthly webinars, e-newsletters and an online community of practice with access to subject matter experts.

We Ask Because We Care

The Patient Demographic Data Collection: We Ask because We Care initiative at CAMH will contribute to our goal of ensuring that every patient has access to the highest quality health care we can provide. Evidence shows that factors such as ethnicity, gender, income, sexual orientation or education can affect patient access to care. Reducing these disparities requires action by health care organizations. Collecting socio-demographic data from patients is a necessary first step for health care organizations to take such action.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission: Count Me In! Collecting Human Rights Based Data is relevant here. The Ontario Human Rights Commission has found that data collection can play a useful and often essential role in creating strong human rights and human resources strategies for organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Health Equity Impact Assessment (HEIA)

Health Equity Impact Assessment (HEIA) is a practical, decision-support tool developed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) to advance health equity and reduce avoidable health disparities between population groups. In partnership with the MOHLTC, CAMH has developed a free, self-directed, interactive e-learning course on HEIA [aussi disponible en Français].

Equity Data Collection Report

The Tri-Hospital + Toronto Public Health Equity Data Collection Report and tool is now used across the TC LHIN. In partnership with St. Michael’s Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital and Toronto Public Health, the CAMH Health Equity Office built the sociodemographic data collection tool in order to identify disparities, develop targets and strategies to address inequalities, and monitor progress.

Health care needs among newly arrived Syrian refugees

Health care needs and use of health care services among newly arrived Syrian refugees: a cross-sectional study is research conducted in partnership with the Wellesley Institute, the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University, the Women’s College Hospital’s Crossroads Clinic, CRICH and St. Michael’s Hospital and funded by the TC LHIN. It presents the results on the health care needs and use of health care services among newly arrived Syrian refugees in Toronto.

Interpretation Services

Interpretation Services provides CAMH patients and their families with access to trained professional interpreters. This service aims to improve communication between patients and service providers, improve access to treatment, and increase the quality of care for patients whose preferred language is not English.
