Motivational interviewing (MI): The four processes (Level 1: Part 2)
This course is appropriate for health care practitioners, allied health care and peer support workers with direct client care responsibilities and who provide conversation/consultation about behavioural changes across a range of health-related issues.
It is expected that participants will have prior experience in counselling and clinical communication
skills. The program will not teach basic counselling and therapy skills. Participants will also have completed introductory level training in the method and spirit of MI.
This course is based on the four-process model of motivational interviewing based on the book Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change (Third edition, 2013). It prepares practitioners to implement the four-process model in diverse practice settings.

The course is led by CAMH staff members from diverse disciplines in health care who are members of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), an international collective of trainers in MI.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
discuss and critique each component of the MI four-process model from the perspective of the client as well as the practitioner
use OARS skills (open questions, affirmations, reflective statements and summaries) to identify and explore issues to be addressed in a patient encounter, including the patient’s context and preferences
describe and differentiate the concepts of “change talk”, “sustain talk” and “discord”
apply knowledge of the therapeutic strategies used in the evoking process of MI in their practice setting
elicit, reinforce and respond to change talk and commitment language in a style consistent with MI in patient consultation sessions
apply six strategies to respond to sustain talk in a style consistent with MI in patient consultation sessions
apply four strategies to respond to discord in a style consistent with MI in patient consultation sessions
articulate and describe six signs of readiness for the transition of moving from the evoking process to the planning process
analyze practice experience, identify practice gaps and implement changes to ensure performance improvement in the four processes of MI.
