TMS Glossary

Anesthesia - administration of a drug to induce partial or total loss of sensation (to avoid feelings of pain)

Auditory hallucinations - the perception of voices or noises in the absence of a stimulus

Buproprion - a type of antidepressant medication (also known as “Wellbutrin”)

Limbic System - a group of interconnected structures in the brain responsible for controlling emotion, motivation, and behaviour

Major depressive disorder - a psychiatric disorder characterized by sadness, loss of appetite, insomnia, loss of self-esteem, feelings of guilt, hopelessness, and thoughts of death

Neurological - relating to the science of nerves and the nervous system

Neurons - cells of the nervous system that carry information to various parts of the body

Parkinson’s disease - a neurological disease believed to be caused by deterioration of the brain cells that produce dopamine; characterized by tremors, muscle rigidity, and slow speech

Refractory - not responsive to traditional forms of therapy (i.e. medication)

Tinnitus - a ringing sensation in the ears

Transcranial - through the cranium or skull
