WSIB: Medication Substance Program (MSP)

The Medication Substance Program (MSP) is a non-OHIP funded Specialty Clinic that provides service to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

This WSIB Specialty Program is designed to meet the needs of workers who are being treated with high dose opioid medications and living with chronic pain issues resulting from a workplace injury. The MSP includes comprehensive, interprofessional outpatient and inpatient services catering to a diverse worker population. Our outpatient professionals include Pharmacists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, and Physicians specializing in Neurology, Addiction, and Pain Management.

Treatment Options include:

  1. Daily Outpatient Group Treatment –  8-week program with a primary focus  on safe tapering of opioid medications as well as coping strategies for pain management.
  2. Inpatient Medical Withdrawal Services – 7-day inpatient program for clients providing  24-hour support and supervision and assessment to assist clients with safe withdrawal from physically addictive substances. Clients are able to access psycho-educational groups during their stay and regular assessment by performed by physicians to monitor and assess progress.
  3. Inpatient Residential Addiction Services – 21 Day-Residential program during which clients are provided with psychoeducation, relapse prevention skills, stress management skills and group processing time.
  4. Outpatient Individualized Services –  provided on an as-needed basis, a customized comprehensive treatment plan is provided by  Addiction Specialists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Pharmacists, and/or Occupational Therapists.

A referral to the program is made by a worker’s Nurse Consultant or Case Manager at the WSIB.

Suitable referrals to MSP would include individuals who are using opioids in the absence of improved function or pain control, use of opioids beyond recommended guidelines for safe use, and behaviours that could be suggestive of substance misuse, as well as those with general mismanaged pain despite being under the watchful dosage/appropriate use of medications.
