The General Psychiatric Unit (GPU) / Acute Care Unit (ACU) treatment team includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social
workers, a recreation therapist, pharmacists, dieticians and program assistants.We offer treatment in a supportive environment
that respects diversity, focuses on harm reduction and is recovery-oriented.
General Psychiatry Unit (GPU)
The General Psychiatry Unit (GPU) is a 23-bed unit that provides short-term inpatient care for a diverse population of individuals
with a severe mental illness and/or addictions issues, who are in the acute phase of their illness. Treatment is individualized
and is delivered by an interdisciplinary team consisting of an attending psychiatrist, psychiatric resident, occupational
therapist, social worker and nurses. Patients requiring longer inpatient stays or ongoing care are usually transferred to
one of CAMH's Continuing Care or other specialty programs.
Referral Required: Yes, usually direct referral from the CAMH Emergency Service or other CAMH in-patient specialty program
and CAMH Bed coordinator.

Acute Care Unit (ACU)
The ACU provides short-term intensive inpatient care for a diverse population of individuals with a severe mental illness
and/or substance abuse issues. This unit provides treatment for individuals who require high levels of observation and intervention
related to their illness. Treatment is carried out by a multidisciplinary team and is individualized based on the client's
needs.

Treatment
You and your treatment team will work together to develop a unique treatment plan.
Primary nursing
Psychiatric nurses are available 24 hours a day. A primary nurse will work closely with you to co-ordinate your care, discuss
your needs and goals and provide support.
Social work
A social worker will meet with you and your family to address your concerns and provide support
Recreation therapy
A recreation therapist provides a variety of leisure activities and resources. We encourage clients to take part in at least
three group activities a week.
Medication management
Medication may be a part of your treatment while you are in hospital and even after you leave.
