Full Event Description

LOST IN TRANSLATION 2013

There is an urgent need to address substance abuse in vulnerable, at-risk individuals; specifically new and expecting mothers. Escalating substance abuse issues within this population require new approaches in order to make a significant and well needed positive impact on their mental health and well-being. These individuals may be particularly susceptible to substance abuse due to a wide variety of factors including stressful personal life events, pre-existing medical conditions, medical histories and psychosocial factors.

To promote solutions, this event will focus on the impact that substance use has on early human development, specifically, the influence of biological, psychological and social mechanisms in mediating the impact substance use may have on critical development periods during the early stages of the human life cycle.

Discussions will be wide ranging and will include the role of model systems along with the new options for intervention and possible consequences for the mental health care system.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN ACADEMIC, RESEARCH-FOCUSED CONFERENCE.
