Pharmacogenetics in Mental Health and Addictions

Description

Pharmacogenetics is an area of personalized medicine that aims to provide safer‚ more efficient‚ and customized drug therapies based on an individual’s unique genetic (i.e., DNA) profile. This two-day course will focus on:

  • optimizing psychiatric drug treatment using genetic information and considering drug-drug interactions
  • providing an introduction to psychiatric pharmacogenetics
  • expanding into the clinical applications of pharmacogenetics in the treatment of mental illness and addictions.

This course will help clinicians and allied health professionals learn effective ways to use pharmacogenetic support tools to deliver personalized medicine by prescribing the best possible medication for patients based on each individual’s genetic profile.

Overall learning objectives

  • Discuss the scientific rationale and methods for pharmacogenetic testing in psychiatry.
  • Identify and discuss benefits of pharmacogenetic testing to optimize patient care outcomes by reducing side effects and improving drug responses.
  • Discuss and critique methods of addressing ethical challenges in a pharmacogenetic research context.
  • Apply knowledge of psychiatric genetics in the decision-making process through case-based scenarios.
