Introduction to Concurrent Disorders Online Course

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTERING

  • This will be the final offering of Introduction to Concurrent Disorders. As of January 2010, this course will be merged into the Concurrent Disorders Online Certificate Program.
  • Completion of Introduction to Concurrent Disorders will not count towards the Concurrent Disorders Online Certificate Program.
  • The certificate program will still cover the majority of material from Introduction to Concurrent Disorders. Therefore, individuals taking it this fall will be eligible for a discount towards the January 2010 offering.

This eight-week course, based on Health Canada’s Best Practices: Concurrent Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders, orients learners to basic concepts of concurrent substance use and mental health disorders and best practices in screening, assessment and treatment. It is for people with experience working in the areas of either mental health or addictions who are interested in applying best practices in concurrent disorders treatment integration.

At the end of this course, you will be able to

  • describe what is meant by “concurrent disorders”
  • identify the effects of values, beliefs and stigma on clients and their care
  • explain the challenges and benefits of integrating mental health and addiction treatment at the service and system levels
  • screen for both substance use and mental health disorders
  • apply best practices for assessment, treatment and support
  • describe how psychoactive drugs and prescribed medications interact with mental health disorders.
