Advanced Issues in Opioid Dependence Treatment

This course is held under the auspices of The Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

 

Description

This interactive workshop provides physicians, pharmacists, nurses and counsellors with the knowledge and skills to manage special issues related to people receiving opioid agonist treatment.  The workshop is a part of the Opioid Dependence Treatment Certificate Program.

The Advanced Issues in opioid dependence treatment course covers a range of topics addressing the complexity of opioid dependence treatment.  The workshop is offered once per year, and each year the topics covered in the workshop are based on a needs assessment survey conducted prior to the workshop.

Topics covered in the workshop may include:

  • Methadone/buprenorphine clients who are multi-substance users
  • Methadone/buprenorphine in pregnancy
  • Methadone/buprenorphine clients who are infected with Hepatitis C
  • Methadone/buprenorphine clients who are infected with HIV
  • Drug interactions with Methadone/buprenorphine 
  • Clients with concurrent opioid dependence and psychiatric disorders
  • Treatment options to manage acute and chronic pain for patients on methadone/buprenorphine 
  • Methadone/buprenorphine treatment for adolescents, older people

 

Prerequisite: methadone exemption / MMT training
