Feeling blue isn’t all bad
Toronto Star
April 8, 2011
Depression is an evolutionary device — the body's way of telling us to stop wasting energy railing against things that can
do us harm, be that a bad boss or a bleak winter, a mental health researcher says.
“It can be a deterrent the same way pain or fever is a defence. It protects you against situations where otherwise you would
spend your energy and resources in a futile way,” said Dr. Benoit Mulsant, physician in chief at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

How Canadian researchers hope to delay onset of Alzheimer’s
The Globe and Mail
February 8, 2011
A gene that plays a role in memory and learning also shapes the architecture of the aging brain in ways that may make people
more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease, a team of Toronto researchers has discovered.
Aristotle Voineskos of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health said the gene causes subtle weaknesses in areas of the brain
that are the first to be affected by Alzheimer’s. It is a common variant, carried by well over half the population, and is
probably one of many risk factors related to the disease.
Workplace Stress
The Globe and Mail
January 26, 2011
Those who shine the brightest are also those most susceptible to burning out – and the risk of flameout is growing for Canadian
executives, workplace experts warn.
That’s borne out in a survey released Tuesday by the Toronto-based Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, which found employees with the greatest responsibility are facing the highest levels of stress on the job. In the survey
of 2,737 Canadian workers, 18 per cent reported that their job was “highly stressful.”

Stressed Out? Try mindfulness meditation
January 9, 2011
Zindel Segal was in a Toronto bookstore a few weeks ago, when a title caught his eye. The book, The Mindful Investor, caused him a moment of shock and panic.
“I turned to someone and said, ‘This is the beginning of the end,’” recalls Dr. Segal, who heads the cognitive behaviour therapy
clinic at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
The book, which purports to explain how a calm mind can help a person achieve financial security, is a sign that the concept
of mindfulness is making a leap into mass popularity. But that doesn’t mean people actually understand it, he says.

Ron Hynes: The man behind the thousand songs
Thestar.com
Wednesday, Nov 10, 2010
The singer known as “The Man of a Thousand Songs” fixes his eyes on the camera in front of him and asks: “So what do you think
this film is about, Bill?”
It’s an interesting way to start a movie, and only partly because Ron Hynes — the near-legendary Newfoundland singer-songwriter
about to be stripped figuratively bare — is looking the viewer straight in the eye. It’s equally interesting because the answer
is only slowly revealed as William D. MacGillivray’s The Man of a Thousand Songs (Saturday’s closing night film at this year’s Rendezvous With Madness Film Festival) begins to slowly probe its subject.
